Hermosa Beach
History
Hermosa Beach, a vibrant coastal haven in Los Angeles’ South Bay, has been a hub for beach lovers since its incorporation in 1907. The city’s charm is rooted in its history, from the construction of its wooden boardwalk along the two-mile Strand in 1901 to the completion of its iconic concrete walkway in 1926. Hermosa’s first pier, built in 1904, was replaced in 1913 after storms damaged the original, paving the way for the modern pier that serves as the heart of the community today.
When Hermosa Beach secured ownership of its ocean frontage in 1907, it was deeded as a public beach playground to be enjoyed by all. This vision lives on with miles of bike paths, open sand, and endless opportunities for outdoor fun.
Today, Hermosa Beach is celebrated for its lively atmosphere, boasting a mix of restaurants, bars, live music venues, and boutique shops. The Strand and Pier Avenue remain the city's centerpiece, drawing locals and visitors alike to enjoy sun-soaked days and vibrant nights in this quintessential beach town.
