Manhattan Beach

Manhattan Beach, a jewel of Los Angeles’ South Bay, began as part of the Rancho Sausal Redondo, meaning "Round Clump of Willows." In 1901, John Merrill, inspired by his New York City roots, named the area Manhattan after winning a coin toss with George Peck, who called his section "Shore Acres." The city was officially incorporated on December 2, 1912, and its early charm included planked roads along the Strand and the construction of its iconic pier.

The first pier, built in 1901 at Center Street, housed a wave motor designed to power Strand lighting. The current Manhattan Beach Pier, completed in 1920, was engineered with a circular end to withstand the waves, making it a landmark beloved by locals and visitors alike.

After World War II, Manhattan Beach blossomed into a sought-after community. Servicemen and defense industry workers were drawn to its year-round coastal living, leading to rapid development east of Sepulveda Boulevard. Today, Manhattan Beach blends small-town charm with luxury beachfront living, offering everything from vibrant dining and shopping to breathtaking sunsets over the Pacific.
