San Pedro
San Pedro, a coastal gem within Los Angeles, is a community rich in history and maritime charm. Once an independent city, it joined Los Angeles in 1909 and now houses much of the bustling Port of Los Angeles, one of the world’s busiest seaports. While rooted in its fishing industry past, San Pedro has evolved into a vibrant neighborhood with a strong working-class spirit and a thriving arts scene.
This area, known as "Chaaw" by the Tongva-Gabrieleño people, was their homeland for thousands of years. These legendary "Lords of the Ocean" mastered the seas with their Ti’ats (oceangoing canoes) and left a lasting legacy across the peninsula. San Pedro’s coastline first welcomed Europeans in 1542 when explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo landed here, marking the start of its storied connection to the sea.
Today, San Pedro offers a unique mix of history, culture, and scenic beauty. Whether you’re exploring historic landmarks, enjoying waterfront dining, or soaking in the views from the Vincent Thomas Bridge, San Pedro captures the heart of coastal Los Angeles living.
